Domain names system to be revamped

Come January 2012 it will be possible for anyone to apply for custom suffixes for domain names. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann) will begin taking applications next year, with corporations and cities expected to be among the first.

Prepare yourselves for the likes of "thinkdifferent.apple" and "thatcallsfora.carlsberg"!

Google to Abandon Older Browsers

Google is to phase out support for older versions of web browsers. People still using older versions of IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari need to update their web browser by August 1st, 2011.

Kooky Dough agree deal with Tesco

Kooky Dough, a Dublin company that produces biscuit baking mixes, has agreed a €550,000 deal to create two Tesco -own brand lines for the supermarket in the UK and Ireland.

Online advertising spend up 12% to €54m

An article in Tuesday's Irish Times detailed the findings of a study on online advertising. The study found that spending on online advertising has risen by more than 12 per cent in the first half of 2010 to almost €54 million.

The study indicated that the pick-up in online advertising was fuelled by a rise in the number of household broadband connections this year and an increase in internet usage, including a dramatic growth in social media usage.

Google Warns of E-Commerce Deficit

According to Google, the Irish government's plan for an export-led recovery is missing a key ingredient; Irish businesses are years behind their European equivalents when it comes to e-commerce.

Why your business should be online...

An article in The Irish Times today states that 71% of SMEs say they have gained additional business by having an online presence. So out of the 800 small and medium sized firms surveyed by ISME a whopping 568 say that there business (and I am presuming sales) have improved from having a website.

Website Translation Grant - Get €975 towards cost of translating your Website

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Enterprise Board have a wonderful grant available to part-fund the cost of translating your website into 5 languages (namely Spanish, French, Polish, Chinese and Russian).

The €975 covers 75% of the cost of translating a maximum of 1500 words of English test into the 5 languages for publicly-funded organisatoins and private sector micro-enterprises (maz 10 employees based in Dun Laoghaire -Rathdown County.
