Google Warns of E-Commerce Deficit

Posted by Chris Godwin in eCommerce

According to Google, the Irish government's plan for an export-led recovery is missing a key ingredient; Irish businesses are years behind their European equivalents when it comes to e-commerce.

In a recent article in The Irish Times, Ronan Harris, director of online sales for Google Europe, stated that "the web should be the first line of attack for engaging with businesses overseas but at the moment it isn’t in Ireland..."

Harris went on to explain how "small but advanced online markets like the Nordics automatically think about building a presence online to connect with their neighbouring markets, making it easy for people to do business with them." This level of engagement is currently not being performed by Irish businesses.

Why your business should be online...

Posted by Roisin Haugh in eCommerce

An article in The Irish Times today states that 71% of SMEs say they have gained additional business by having an online presence. So out of the 800 small and medium sized firms surveyed by ISME a whopping 568 say that there business (and I am presuming sales) have improved from having a website.

Here are some other interesting stats from the article:

  •  83% of Irish Small and medium sized businesses have their own webiste
  • 28% are selling online
  • About 25% have embraced Social Media with most of those businesses using Facebook.

Its very interesting to note that the main reasons for business NOT selling online is the availability, standard and cost of broadband and lack of knowledge within individual companies.
